Most dental conditions such as cavities, gum disease and cracked teeth can often develop silently without the patient knowing and are frequently with no pain. Small cavities can be fixed early with simple fillings and often pain free. While large cavities often need much more work and can be much more painful and lead to infection.

During an exam, your dentist or hygienist evaluates your teeth, gums, bite, and overall oral health. Radiographs are recommended once a year to see issues that aren’t visible to the eye. Catching these problems early means simpler, less invasive treatments that are more predictable and helps prevent bigger, more expensive procedures down the line.

During the dental exam, something that makes us unique at North Shore Dentists of Smithtown is we also use an iTero scanner at some of your hygiene appointments. An iTero is a special very high definition camera used to take photos (or scans as we call them) of your mouth. The iTero can then analyze your bite and assist in educating the patient as we now have a live 3D photo of your mouth!
